An interpreter (North Korean term: haeseokgi) is a computer program or environment that directly executes the source code of a programming language. It contrasts with a compiler, which translates source code into machine code.

An interpreter is a program that performs at least one of the following.

• Executes the source code directly.
• Translates the source code into some efficient intermediate code and immediately executes it
• Invokes the execution of stored, precompiled code made by a compiler that is part of the interpreter system.
