Internet Explorer (IE) is a web browser developed by Microsoft. Its user base grew rapidly after Microsoft began bundling the software by default with the Microsoft Windows operating system in 1995. Since 1999 it became the most widely used web browser in the world, and in 2002 and 2003 the usage share of Internet Explorer versions 5 and 6 peaked at 95%. However, as Microsoft stopped supporting Internet Explorer on platforms other than its own products and alternative browsers such as Mozilla Firefox were developed, its decline has continued despite the release of Internet Explorer 7.
In South Korea, however, dependence on Internet Explorer is relatively high. This is because, along with online banking compatibility issues, most Korean website developers do not consider compatibility across multiple web browsers and operating systems and forcibly adopt ActiveX, which even Microsoft no longer recommends. Some websites also made it impossible to access them without the Internet Explorer web browser, which is part of the reason.
