ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is one of the main protocols of the Internet protocol suite. It is mainly used by operating systems of networked computers to receive error messages (Requested service is not available, etc.), and as one of the main members of the Internet protocol suite it relies on the Internet Protocol to do its work. It is assigned protocol number 1, and differs from TCP and UDP in that it is not used to exchange data between systems and is not applied to end users (except for some diagnostic programs such as ping and traceroute). ICMP for Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) is known as ICMPv4, and likewise the IPv6 version is ICMPv6.
