Interlaced scanning (Interlace scanning) is a video display method that displays a single image by alternating between its odd and even horizontal lines.
It is a method for improving the image quality shown on video display devices such as televisions without increasing analog bandwidth. Developed in the late 1920s by RCA engineer Randall Ballard, it was widely used until the 1970s, before progressive scanning arrived through computer monitors and video game consoles. Today, interlaced scanning is used mainly only in video, SDTV, and the HDTV standard 1080i.
