Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) is an American multinational corporation that designs and manufactures semiconductors. It is the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer; its headquarters are in Santa Clara, California, and its semiconductor fabrication plant is in San Jose, California.
Intel was founded by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce on July 18, 1968. The name Intel is a blend of Integrated Electronics. However, some people mistakenly believe it comes from the English word 'intelligence'.
In 1971 it made the first microprocessor, the Intel 4004, and the later Intel 8088 became famous after being used in the IBM PC. The x86 instruction architecture created at that time, through extensions, has come to be widely used in the desktop market to this day, and "PC" generally also refers to IBM PC compatibles that use x86-compatible processors.
It also makes communications and computing devices such as motherboard chipsets, network cards, integrated circuits, flash memory, graphics processors, and embedded processors.
