About IaaS

What is IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)? The core of cloud-based IT infrastructure

Infrastructure as a service, or IaaS, is a type that goes a step beyond on-premises infrastructure. It is a pay-as-you-go service in which a third party provides infrastructure services such as storage and virtualization over the internet through the cloud, as needed.

The user is responsible for the operating system and data, applications, middleware and runtime, while the provider is responsible for managing and providing access to the network, servers, virtualization and storage the user needs.

The provider maintains or updates the on-site data center on the user's behalf. Instead, the user accesses and controls the infrastructure through an application programming interface (API) or a dashboard.

IaaS offers the flexibility to buy only the components you need and to scale up or down as needed. IaaS is a very economical option with low overhead and no maintenance costs.

IaaS has the advantage that building and tearing down development and test environments is fast and flexible. Users use only the infrastructure they need to build in the development environment, scale up or down as needed, stop using it once development is complete, and pay only for what they used.

The main drawbacks of IaaS are potential provider security issues, multi-tenant systems in which the provider must share infrastructure resources with multiple clients, and service reliability. You can avoid these drawbacks by choosing a reliable provider with a solid track record and reputation.

Public cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are examples of IaaS.
