Infrastructure refers to the basic facilities that form the foundation of economic activity, i.e. social overhead capital closely tied to economic activity, such as roads, rivers, ports, and airports. It is often shortened to "infra". More recently, social welfare and living-environment facilities such as schools, hospitals, and parks are also included. The term "infrastructure" has also broadened to mean "foundation" in general, as in "payment infrastructure" or "delivery infrastructure".
