In computer vision, when a scene or object is captured at different times or from different viewpoints, the images are obtained in different coordinate systems. Image registration is a processing technique that transforms such different images to represent them in a single coordinate system. Registration reveals how images obtained through different measurement methods correspond to each other.
In medical image processing, comparing images of an affected area over time, or comparing them with images of normal tissue, may require elastic registration to correct for deformations such as breathing. Non-rigid registration of medical images makes it possible to register a patient's images to an anatomical atlas.
