In image processing, computer vision, and related fields, an image moment is a certain particular weighted average of the image pixels' intensities, or a function of such moments, usually chosen to have some attractive property or interpretation. Image moments are useful for describing objects after segmentation.

Image moments, in image processing, computer vision, and related fields, refer to a particular weighted average (moment) of the intensities of image pixels, or generally to a function that captures or allows interpretation of some unique characteristic of an object.
Simply put, given a binary image, they are the unique characteristics held by the x-axis and y-axis.
The value is the sum over the pixel indices on the x-axis and y-axis of each image: at order 0 only the image values are summed, at order 1 the image is multiplied by only the x-axis or y-axis value, at order 2 by its square, and at order 3 by its cube, and then summed.
Image moments can be divided into
- spatial moments
- central moments
- mass center
- nomalized central moments
and so on.
