Illustration

An illustration, also called a diagram (explanatory drawing), is a picture attached to supplement or emphasize the content of a text, especially in books (manuscripts, printed books, etc.), magazines, newspapers, advertisements, and so on. Even a picture not made directly for this purpose serves as an illustration if it is cited in connection with a text. A picture attached to a text but not directly related to its content is closer to a decorative painting than an illustration.

In modern times, however, the profession of illustrator sits between fine-art painters and graphic designers, and the "illustration-style pictures" they draw are called illustrations whether or not they accompany a text.
