iPerf - The ultimate speed test tool for TCP, UDP and SCTP

Iperf is a network performance measurement and tuning tool. It is a cross-platform tool and can produce standardized performance measurements for any network.

Iperf has client and server functionality, and can create data streams to measure the throughput between two ends in one or both directions.

What is iPerf / iPerf3 ?

iPerf3 is a tool for active measurements of the maximum achievable bandwidth on IP networks. It supports tuning of various parameters related to timing, buffers and protocols (TCP, UDP, SCTP with IPv4 and IPv6). For each test it reports the bandwidth, loss, and other parameters. This is a new implementation that shares no code with the original iPerf and also is not backwards compatible. iPerf was orginally developed by NLANR/DAST. iPerf3 is principally developed by ESnet / Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is released under a three-clause BSD license.

Install

sudo apt install iperf3

This is how to check TCP data upload and download speeds.

Run the following on the server PC

$ iperf -s

Then run the following on the client PC (of course, use the server's IP address)

iperf -c 192.168.0.95

When the connection succeeds and the test finishes, the server prints the following:

------------------------------------------------------------
Server listening on TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 128 KByte (default)
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 1] local 192.168.0.95 port 5001 connected with 192.168.0.250 port 36640
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 1] 0.0000-10.0898 sec 440 MBytes 366 Mbits/sec

The client prints the following:

------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to 192.168.0.95, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 255 KByte (default)
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 3] local 192.168.0.250 port 36640 connected with 192.168.0.95 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 440 MBytes 368 Mbits/sec
