IKEA (Swedish: IKEA) is a Swedish furniture manufacturing company. IKEA grew and became famous for its distinctive Scandinavian design, low prices, and above all for selling DIY products that consumers transport and assemble themselves, with no assembly or delivery costs. IKEA was founded in Sweden in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad and is now run by a foundation registered in the Netherlands. The first showroom store opened in Älmhult, Sweden, in 1953. The name 'IKEA' is an acronym formed from the founder's name Ingvar Kamprad, the name of his family farm Elmtaryd, and his hometown Agunnaryd.
IKEA Holding B.V. is the parent company of the entire IKEA group, and an important company under it is Swedwood, which makes IKEA furniture. Inter IKEA Systems B.V. is in Delft, owns the IKEA concept and trademarks, and is where franchise agreements worldwide are made. The IKEA Group is the largest company belonging to it.
