(For the archive format faster than tar, see hop (Archive Format).)
A hop is one portion of the path between a source and a destination in a computer network. Data packets pass through bridges, routers, and gateways on their way from the source to the destination. Each time a packet moves to the next network device, one hop occurs. The hop count refers to the number of intermediate devices that data must pass through between the source and the destination.
Because store-and-forward and other latencies are incurred at each hop, a large number of hops between source and destination can degrade real-time performance.
