Hangul (한글), also called Joseongeul (조선글), is the native writing system of the Korean language. It was created in 1443 by Sejong, the 4th king of Joseon, under the name Hunminjeongeum (訓民正音), and promulgated in 1446. Afterwards it was sometimes looked down upon by the literati who clung to Classical Chinese, but it was carried on mainly by the Joseon royal family, some of the yangban class, and commoners, and in the Gabo Reform of 1894 it became Korea's official national script. In the 1910s, the Hangul scholar Ju Si-gyeong began using the name 'Hangul'. In terms of classification, it is an alphabet (segmental script) among phonetic writing systems. In Korea, the Hangul Exclusive Use Act is in force.
