HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer, HTTP over TLS, HTTP over SSL, HTTP Secure) is a security-enhanced version of HTTP, the communication protocol of the World Wide Web. HTTPS was developed by Netscape Communications Corporation for authentication and encryption of communications, and is widely used in e-commerce.
Instead of using plain text in socket communication, HTTPS encrypts session data through the SSL or TLS protocol. This ensures adequate protection of the data. The default TCP/IP port for HTTPS is 443.
The level of protection depends on the correctness of the implementation in the web browser and server software, and on the supported encryption algorithms.
The URI of a web page using HTTPS begins with 'https://' instead of 'http://'.
