The runner is the application that runs a job from a GitHub Actions workflow. It is used by GitHub Actions in the hosted virtual environments, or you can self-host the runner in your own environment.
Self-hosted runner
A Self-hosted Runner is a Github Actions feature that runs builds on local computing resources specified by the user. It is mainly useful when deployments are delayed because of a heavy deployment workload, or when server costs are a burden.
In the repository where you want to use Github Actions, go to "Settings - Actions - Runners" and click the "New self-hosted runner" button.
For x64, the install instructions are as follows:
# Create a folder
$ mkdir actions-runner && cd actions-runner
# Download the latest runner package
$ curl -o actions-runner-linux-x64-2.336.0.tar.gz -L https://github.com/actions/runner/releases/download/v2.336.0/actions-runner-linux-x64-2.336.0.tar.gz
# Optional: Validate the hash
$ echo "04cf0be1aff4c3ec3554466c39124ca250e3effd8873bb7e8d68535aa9505d5d actions-runner-linux-x64-2.336.0.tar.gz" | shasum -a 256 -c
# Extract the installer
$ tar xzf ./actions-runner-linux-x64-2.336.0.tar.gz
Configure:
# Create the runner and start the configuration experience
$ ./config.sh --url https://github.com/XXXX/YYYYY --token ZZZZ
