GUID Partition Table

In computer hardware, the GUID Partition Table (GPT) is a standard for the layout of the partition table on a physical hard disk. Although it forms part of the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) standard (proposed by Intel to replace the PC BIOS), it is also used on some BIOS systems because of the limitations of the MBR partition table. The MBR partition table limits the size of a single disk partition to at most 2.2 TB (2.2 × 1012 bytes)). GPT allows disk and partition sizes of up to 9.4 ZB (9.4 × 1021 bytes).
As of 2010, support for GPT across common systems is limited.
