GTK+, short for GIMP Toolkit, was originally a toolkit made for GIMP and is one of the widget toolkits for the X Window System. GTK+ and Qt became good alternatives to Motif. GTK+ was created in 1997 by Spencer Kimball, Peter Mattis, and Josh MacDonald, who were all members of the eXperimental Computing Facility (XCF) at UC Berkeley. Because it is licensed under the LGPL, GTK+ is free and open-source software and part of the GNU Project.
