FreeRDP

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), released under the Apache license. Enjoy the freedom of using your software wherever you want, the way you want it, in a world where interoperability can finally liberate your computing experience.

Install

Ubuntu/Debian: 

sudo apt install freerdp2-x11

Fedora: 

sudo dnf install freerdp

Arch: 

sudo pacman -S freerdp

RemoteApp

To run a RemoteApp with FreeRDP, use the following command: 

xfreerdp /v:your-server-address /u:username /p:password /app:"||AppAlias"

Here, your-server-address is the address of the Windows server, and username and password are the user name and password needed for authentication. AppAlias is the alias of the application you want to run.

Example

If you want to run Notepad (notepad), enter the command as follows: 

xfreerdp /v:your-server-address /u:username /p:password /app:"||notepad"

Someone reportedly ran KakaoTalk like this: 

xfreerdp -u forcecore --app --plugin rail --data "%windir%\system32\cmd.exe" -- SERVER:PORT

*.rdp file

You can also save RemoteApp settings in an .rdp file and run it. An .rdp file is a plain text file that can contain various configuration options.

Troubleshooting

RAIL_EXEC_E_NOT_IN_ALLOWLIST

xfreerdp -u forcecore --app --plugin rail --data "\Program Files (x86)\Kakao\KakaoTalk\KakaoTalk.exe" -- SERVER:PORT

If you get a RAIL_EXEC_E_NOT_IN_ALLOWLIST error when connecting, you need to add the program to the RemoteApp access list on the host server (Windows).

Alternatively, edit the registry so that all programs can be accessed: 

\\HKLocalMachine\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services

If the key (folder) does not exist, add it, and add the following value at that location.

  • Type: DWORD32
  • Key: fAllowUnlistedRemotePrograms
  • Value: 1

Then connect.
