A new foundational dataset for the geospatial community

About

  • FSQ OS Places is an open-source project providing a dataset of over 100 million points of interest (POI) worldwide
    • Includes over 100 million global POIs, 1000+ categories, 200+ countries and regions, and 22 core attributes, updated monthly
    • Commercial use allowed under the Apache 2.0 license
  • Goal: provide open-source access to places data to move beyond the limits of large, closed proprietary data systems

Why Open Source Places?

  • Foursquare releases part of the proprietary dataset it built over many years to the community
  • Questions were raised internally too, but it made the bold decision for the advancement of the geospatial ecosystem
  • Importance of an accurate global POI database
    • Connecting systems to the physical world
    • In Spatial Computing, it is essential for systems to understand their surroundings accurately
    • Inaccurate data hurts the user experience (e.g., wrong route guidance, augmented reality errors)
  • Building and maintaining a global POI database is hard
    • A database synced in real time must be maintained, but building a POI dataset that represents the real world is a technical and capital challenge
    • Requires cooperation between cutting-edge digital systems and human verification (Human-in-the-loop)
  • Without a large proprietary platform (e.g., Google Maps), an open-source community approach is the most suitable solution for building a global, accurate base layer of places data
