Foursquare is a location-based social networking service and the name of the company that developed it. Users can "check in" to specific places in the Foursquare service using an application on their mobile phone or the short message service. In the early days of the service, the main goals for users were to earn points as a reward for "check-ins", collect "badges", and become the "Mayor" of a specific location. It later evolved toward stronger SNS features and sharing information about places. In May 2014, the existing check-in service was spun off as the Swarm application, and the original Foursquare service was specialized for sharing information about specific places. As of April 2015, the service had surpassed 55 million registered users, 70 million tips (information about specific places), and 7 billion check-ins.
