Formal science is the academic study of theoretical formal systems. It is established by theoretical symbols and rules. It differs from natural science in that formal science starts from theoretical concepts and reaches other concepts through reasoning, whereas natural science starts from observation of the real world and arrives at models that are generally useful for some part of reality.
