A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents an algorithm or process, using various kinds of boxes and arrows connecting them to show the order of instructions. Through this diagrammatic form of knowledge representation, a problem can be solved step by step in order. The operation of a process is represented by these boxes and by arrow connections that show the flow of control. Flowcharts are generally not used for data flow; data flow diagrams are used instead. Flowcharts are used in many fields for analyzing, designing, planning, documenting, or managing processes and problems.

In EDPS, a chart that clearly lays out the operation sequence of a program using graphic symbols representing computation, input, output, comparison, and so on, and lines connecting them. Also called a flow diagram, circulation chart, or flowchart. The symbols commonly used are those established by the American National Standards Inshulde.
