A filename is a special kind of string used to identify a file stored in a computer's file system. Depending on the operating system, such a name may also be recognized as a directory. Different operating systems may limit the length of filenames or disallow certain strings. Also, depending on the file system and operating system, filenames may or may not be case-sensitive. For example, old versions of MS-DOS supported only an 8-character name and a 3-character extension, but from MS-DOS 7.x onward, long filenames of 255 characters are supported.

  • Device (node): port, socket, drive, root mount point, disk, volume (e.g. C:, /, SYSLIB)
  • File: base filename
  • Type (format or extension): indicates the content type of the file (e.g. .txt, .exe, .dir)
