A file system (North Korean standard language: pail chegye) refers to a system for storing or organizing files and data on a computer so that they can be easily found and accessed.
A file system usually refers to managing the physical location of files using an actual data storage device such as a hard disk or CD-ROM, but the scope of file systems can also include methods that provide access to data on a file server through a client running a network protocol (NFS, SMB, 9P, etc.) and methods in virtual form where only the means of access exists (procfs, etc.). Its meaning differs slightly from directory services and registries.
