lastmod 2025-03-13created 2016-06-2111 edits

Free peer-to-peer file transfers in your browser. We never store anything. Files only served fresh.

Features

  • Uses WebRTC to eliminate the initial upload step required by other web-based file sharing services
  • Since data is not stored on an intermediate server, transfers are fast, private, and secure
  • A hosted instance of FilePizza is available at file.pizza

What's new in FilePizza v2

  • New UI with dark mode support, built on modern browser technologies
  • Works on most mobile browsers, including mobile Safari
  • Faster handshake through direct transfer from the uploader to the downloading browser (WebRTC, no WebTorrent)
  • The uploader can monitor transfer progress and stop it
  • Stronger security and safety measures through password protection and reporting
  • Multiple files can be uploaded at once, and the downloader receives them as a zip file
  • Streaming downloads via service workers
  • Out-of-process storage of server state using Redis

Tech stack and development

  • Next.js, Tailwind, TypeScript, React, PeerJS (for WebRTC), View Transitions, Redis (optional)
  • Clone the source code from GitHub, then install and run it with pnpm
  • FilePizza can be built and run with Docker

FAQ

  • How files are transferred: files are sent directly from the uploader's browser to the downloader's browser. They do not pass through a server. Files are transferred using WebRTC, and the uploader must keep the browser window open until the transfer completes.
  • Simultaneous downloads: yes. Just send the short or long URL.
  • File size limit: as large as your browser can handle
  • If the browser is closed: the file URL no longer works. If a download has completed, that downloader keeps seeding to downloaders who have not finished, but no new downloads can start.
  • Whether files are encrypted: all WebRTC communication is automatically encrypted with DTLS. For extra security, you can add a password to an upload.
