The FAIR project - decentralized WordPress

About

  • WordPress's centralized, opaque governance became a central issue in the community, raising the need for an independent and transparent alternative
  • From late 2024 to early 2025, several decentralization efforts such as AspirePress (a community mirror) emerged, and discussion of open letters and a technical/governance "dual-track" alternative got underway in earnest
  • In this movement, various groups joined forces to build FAIR (Federated and Independent Repositories), a practical "decentralized WordPress package management/distribution infrastructure"
  • FAIR is managed by a community-led Technical Steering Committee (TSC) under the Linux Foundation and provides practical ecosystem infrastructure such as mirrors, packages, commercial plugins, and cryptographic signing. Rather than forking WordPress, it provides "a new distribution and governance layer"
  • FAIR's emergence is seen not as mere resistance but as a "contribution" toward better infrastructure and governance within the open-source ecosystem
