Fault tolerance

A fault tolerant system is a system that can continue to perform its functions normally or partially even when a fault or failure occurs in some of the components that make up the system. When a component fails, a fault tolerant system loses some of its functions, and as component faults or failures keep occurring, the number of unavailable functions gradually increases; when a critical fault or failure occurs, the system stops. In this respect, a fault tolerant system has the characteristic of graceful degradation (stepwise performance degradation). In an ordinary system that does not take fault tolerance into account, even a minor fault or failure in a component stops the system from operating.
