Erlang (IPA: [ˈɜrlæŋ]) is a general-purpose concurrent programming language. It is a well-known example of a functional language being used efficiently in industrial settings.
It was originally developed by Ericsson for use in switching software, but was released as open source in 1998.
It is commonly thought that the name Erlang comes from Ericsson Language, but it actually comes from the name of Agner Krarup Erlang, a Danish mathematician who studied communication theory.
Erlang, which appeared in the 1980s, is the only functional language used in industry, and its key features are distributed programming, concurrency, and parallel processing. It has recently drawn attention with the spread of multicore (multicore) systems, and it can excellently solve the speed and overload problems faced by existing sequential programming languages.
