English (English language) is a West Germanic language that originated in England in Great Britain. Today it is used as a primary language in many countries around the world and is widely used not only as an official language but also as a second language. Owing to the military, economic, scientific, political, and cultural influence of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, and the influence of the United States since the mid-20th century, English is the most widely taught and understood language in the world and is sometimes likened to a lingua franca.
