Emoji refers to electronically processed pictographs developed in Japan, and the technology behind them. It is a Japanese word made up of 絵 (e), meaning picture, and 文字 (moji), meaning character.
Because the name is similar to emoticon, the two are easy to confuse (in fact, many people mistake emoji for emoticons), but the etymologies of the two words are completely unrelated. They also differ in that an emoticon represents a shape with a combination of text, while an emoji is an image treated as a single character in itself.
