Electronic engineering (電子工學, electronics) is a branch of engineering that studies scientific knowledge of the effects on and behavior of electron motion in order to develop components, systems, or various equipment (vacuum tubes, transistors, integrated circuits, printed circuit boards) that use electric power as a driving force. The field denotes a broad engineering area that includes power, mechanical engineering, telecommunications, semiconductor circuit design, and many other subfields. The design and construction of electronic circuits, including the hardware design of computer engineering, is a branch of electronic engineering that solves specific problems. Research on new semiconductor devices is sometimes classified as a branch of physics. Representative industries where electronic engineering is applied include the telecommunications, computer, and semiconductor industries. The concept was born in the United States as vacuum tubes made rapid progress in telecommunications and television, radio, computers, radar, and the like became central to civilization in the late 20th century. It covers a wide range of content, from fundamental areas to applications.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is one of the most influential organizations for electronic engineers.
