Effects unit

An effector is a device that applies effects to sound. It is also called outboard gear or a processor. Depending on the type of effect, effectors are divided into frequency-based, spatial, dynamics-based, and so on. Besides these, there are many other effectors, such as ones that add distortion and ones that modulate the voice. The photo above is an AMS Neve outboard unit, a compressor, which is a dynamics-type effector.

In fact, the name "effector" is Japanglish. In the English-speaking world it is called an Effect unit, and when people get lazy they just call it an 'effect'.
