EUC-KR is an 8-bit character encoding, a type of EUC, that uses KS X 1001 and KS X 1003. Because it is the representative precomposed Hangul encoding, it is usually called Wansung (precomposed).
The EUC-KR encoding is structured as follows.
- KS X 1003 is assigned to bytes less than 128.
- KS X 1001 is assigned to bytes greater than or equal to 128. Each character is represented in 2 bytes, using code values obtained by adding 128 to the row and column.
