du (abbreviated from disk usage) is a standard Unix program used to estimate file space usage—space used under a particular directory or files on a file system. Short for Disk Usage, it is a command used to check the usage of files and directories. The du command calculates and displays the usage not only of the current directory but also of all subdirectories and files under the current directory. The default unit for displaying size is kbyte.
