The Do Not Track (DNT) header refers to the proposed HTTP header field DNT, which sends web applications a request to refrain from tracking an individual user within a site or across other sites. Efforts to standardize Do Not Track were first started in 2009 by Christopher Soghoian, Sid Stamm, and Dan Kaminsky.
Mozilla Firefox became the first browser to implement this feature, and Internet Explorer, Apple's Safari, Opera, and Google Chrome all added support later.
Console Do Not Track
A proposed standard for easily opting out of telemetry in TUI/console apps
- Gatsby, Homebrew, Syncthing, Google Cloud CLI, AWS Serverless CLI, Azure CLI, etc. each turn off telemetry through a different setting
- The idea is to turn off all tracking/reporting/auto-updates through a standard environment variable, "export DO_NOT_TRACK=1"
- netdata and tilt have adopted it, and PRs have been sent to homebrew, gatsby, etc.
