DivX (pronounced "dibik" or "dibiks" in Korean) is a video codec independently developed by DivX, Inc. based on MPEG-4 technology. It has the powerful ability to compress large, long videos to a small size while staying close to the original quality. It can compress to about 15% of the original size.
There are two kinds of DivX codecs: the MPEG-4 Part 2 DivX codec and the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC DivX Plus HD codec. The DivX codec is mainly used for ripping multimedia data such as movies.
When it was first developed, only an audio codec existed, but now only the video codec is provided. Therefore, DivX now mostly refers to the video codec.
