Disk encryption is a technology that protects information by converting it into code that cannot be easily deciphered by unauthorized people. Disk encryption uses disk encryption software or hardware to encrypt every bit of data on a disk or disk volume. Disk encryption is used to prevent unauthorized access to data storage.
Full disk encryption (FDE) encrypts everything on the disk, but the master boot record (MBR) or a similar area of a bootable disk, which contains the code that starts the operating system loading sequence, is not encrypted. Some hardware-based full disk encryption systems can actually encrypt the entire boot disk, including the MBR.
