In computing, a directory (North Korean standard term: deungnokbu, "register") is a namespace used to organize files. Within a file system it consists of files and other subdirectories. On many computers a directory is also called a folder or a catalog. The Standard Korean Language Dictionary lists the Korean spelling as "direkteori", and in Microsoft Windows the terms folder and directory are used interchangeably.
A typical file system contains thousands of directories. Related files are stored in the same directory, where they are listed and managed. A directory inside another directory is called a subdirectory (North Korean standard term: bojo-deungnokbu) or sub directory of that directory. Likewise, with the name folder, it is called a subfolder. In addition, directories form a hierarchy, that is, a tree structure.
The terms parent directory and child directory are also used to describe the relationship between a subdirectory and the directory it belongs to.
