DirectX

Microsoft DirectX is a collection of APIs for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming, on Microsoft platforms. DirectX is widely used in the development of computer and video games for Microsoft Windows, Sega, Dreamcast, Microsoft Xbox, and Xbox 360.

DirectX is also used across the software industry, not just for games, because it can quickly render high-quality 3D graphics using recent 3D graphics hardware. The DirectX runtime and software development kit are free, but they are closed-source software (the opposite of open source) that cannot be modified. The DirectX runtime was originally distributed only to computer game developers, but it is now included in Windows. Direct3D 9Ex, Direct3D 10, and Direct3D 11 are available only on Windows Vista and Windows 7. This is because these new versions require the new Windows Display Driver Model introduced in Windows Vista. The new Vista/WDDM graphics architecture includes a new video memory manager that helps virtualize graphics hardware for multiple applications and services, such as the Desktop Window Manager.

DirectX7 is no longer supported. So to use DirectDraw, you need to download the library separately.

Caveats for DirectX9.0b

With VisualC++ 2005EE or earlier (including VisualC++ 2008EE) and DirectX9.0b installed, an error may occur and compilation may fail. (Depending on the DirectX version, the error may not occur.)

The error says that the way PVOID64 is defined in WinNT.h is wrong. Looking around line 236 of WinNT.h, it is written as follows.

typedef void *PVOID;
typedef void * POINTER_64 PVOID64;

Change the code above as follows.

typedef void *PVOID;
typedef void * POINTER_64, * PVOID64;

Troubleshooting

Error Code S1023

Error Code S1023 appears while installing DirectX SDK (June 2010) on Windows 7. The cause is that a newer version of the Visual C++ 2010 X86/X64 Redistributable Package is installed. First, remove these from the Control Panel. They can also be removed by entering the following at the DOS command line.

MsiExec.exe /passive /X{F0C3E5D1-1ADE-321E-8167-68EF0DE699A5}
MsiExec.exe /passive /X{1D8E6291-B0D5-35EC-8441-6616F567A0F7}
