Digital rights management

Digital rights management (DRM) is a term referring to all technologies used by publishers or copyright holders to control the use of the digital material or hardware they distribute and to restrict it to its intended uses only. It is often confused with copy protection and technical protection measures. Those two terms are part of digital rights management design and refer to technologies used to control the use of digital content on electronic devices where such technologies are installed.

Digital rights management is a controversial field. Supporters say it is necessary for copyright owners to prevent illegal copying of their works and secure a continuing source of income. Critics of the technology, including the Free Software Foundation, suggest avoiding the term "rights" because it can be misleading, and replacing it with the more accurate term digital restrictions management.

It is mainly used to keep internal documents containing corporate confidential information from leaking outside.

Much music, film, and so on that used to be distributed offline on CDs, DVDs, etc. is now distributed online, and to block illegal use without paying a fair price, use is controlled so that only authenticated users can use the content during an authorized period. This is a technology widely used for that purpose.
