Debian is a free computer operating system developed by the Debian Project. It comes in variants such as Debian GNU/Linux with the Linux kernel, Debian GNU/Hurd with the GNU Hurd kernel, Debian GNU/KFreeBSD with the FreeBSD kernel, and Debian GNU/NetBSD with the NetBSD kernel; of these, only Debian GNU/Linux, based on the Linux kernel, currently has an official release.
Debian's distinguishing feature is the simplicity of installing and upgrading packages. Once it is installed, the update mechanism of the package manager APT automatically configures and installs what software installation or updates need, such as dependency checks against other packages and security updates.
The name comes from combining the names of Ian Murdock, founder of the Debian Project, and his wife (girlfriend at the time) Debra. Debian runs on a wide range of hardware, from network-attached storage to phones, laptops, desktops, and servers. Debian focuses on stability and security, and serves as the base of many other Linux distributions, such as the user-friendly Ubuntu.
Debian's motto is "The universal operating system".
