.deb is the extension of the Debian software package format and the most commonly used file name for binary packages in the Debian software format.
Design
A Debian package uses a standard Unix ar archive containing two Tar archives, optionally compressed with Gzip (zlib), Bzip2, Izma, or xz (Izma2); these hold the control information and the program data.
The accepted program is Dpkg, but most people use APT or aptitude, Ubuntu Software Center, Synaptic, or GDebi.
Debian packages can be converted to other package formats with Alien, and can be created from source code with CheckInstall and Debian Package Manager.
Some core Debian packages exist in the udeb format ("micro debs") and are normally used only for bootstrapping the Debian installer. Although these files use the udeb extension, they follow the same structure definition as ordinary deb files. However, unlike deb, udeb contains only the files needed for operation. [2] In particular, documentation files are normally omitted. udeb packages cannot be installed on an ordinary Debian system.
