Dashcam

is an onboard camera that continuously records the view through a vehicle's front windscreen and sometimes the rear or other windows. Some dashcams include a camera that records the interior of the car with a 360-degree interior camera, usually in a ball form, and can automatically send photos and video using 4G.

EDRs and some dashcams also record acceleration/deceleration g-force, speed, steering angle, GPS data, supply voltage (the vehicle's electrical network), and more.

Front cameras with a wide angle of 130°, 170° or more can be attached to the interior windscreen, the rear-view mirror (clip mount), or the top of the dashboard via a suction cup or adhesive tape mount. Rear cameras are usually mounted on the rear window or the registration plate, and RCA video is output to a display monitor/screen.

Resolution determines the overall quality of the video. Full HD or 1080p (1920×1080) is the standard for dash HD cams. Dashboard cameras support resolutions of 1080p, 1296p (common in Chinese dashcams), 1440p or higher for front cameras and 720p for rear cameras, and include an f/1.8 aperture and night vision mode.

Dashcams can provide video evidence in the event of a traffic accident. When parked, a dashcam can capture video and photo evidence when vandalism is detected by a 360° parking monitor and send it to the owner, usually using 4G.
