DNF (Dandified Yum) is a package management tool for RPM-based Linux distributions.
It was first introduced in Fedora 18, and starting with Fedora 22 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 it was adopted as the default package management tool, replacing the existing Yum.
DNF was developed to solve Yum's problems, such as poor performance, high memory usage, and an inefficient mechanism for resolving redundant dependencies. Unlike Yum, it handles dependency problems through the external library libsolv.
DNF performs package management tasks using the RPM package manager and several supporting libraries.
It was originally developed in Python based on Yum 3.4, but work is now underway to port most of its functionality to C and move it into the libdnf library.
