Cypher (query language)

lastmod 2026-01-19created 2026-01-192 edits

Cypher is a declarative graph query language that allows expressive and efficient querying and updating of a property graph. Cypher is a relatively simple yet very powerful language. Very complex database queries can be expressed easily through Cypher. This lets users focus on their domain instead of getting lost in database access.

Cypher was originally created by Neo4j Inc. (formerly Neo Technology) for the graph database Neo4j, but it was opened up through the openCypher project in October 2015 and has since been adopted by several other graph database vendors, including SAP HANA and AgensGraph.
