Cygwin is a collection of free software originally developed by Cygnus Solutions, an emulator designed to provide a Unix-like environment on various versions of Microsoft Windows. It is distributed under the GNU GPL and can be used freely.
What
Cygwin is:
- a large collection of GNU and Open Source tools which provide functionality similar to a Linux distribution on Windows.
- a DLL (cygwin1.dll) which provides substantial POSIX API functionality.
Cygwin is not:
- a way to run native Linux apps on Windows. You must rebuild your application from source if you want it to run on Windows.
- a way to magically make native Windows apps aware of UNIX® functionality like signals, ptys, etc. Again, you need to build your apps from source if * you want to take advantage of Cygwin functionality.

On Windows 7, run Cygwin with administrator privileges, then remove it with chmod -R -f 777 * followed by the rm -r -f * command. If it is not deleted properly, you will need to adjust the Windows 7 directory permission settings. If a file named nul cannot be deleted, see here. For reference, the code is as follows.
