Ctags generates an index (or tag) file of language objects found in source files that allows these items to be quickly and easily located by a text editor or other utility. A tag signifies a language object for which an index entry is available (or, alternatively, the index entry created for that object).

How to use
The default output file name is tags, and you can specify a file name with the -f option.
If you need to generate a tags file for subdirectories, use the -R option.
On Windows, if the DB is not generated correctly when you pass a file path as an argument, you must use / instead of \ as the directory separator.
Options
-
--tag-relative=no - Writes TAG file paths as absolute paths. This option is set to yes by default.
Exuberant Ctags
Exuberant Ctags is a multilanguage reimplementation of the Unix ctags utility. Ctags generates an index of source code definitions which is used by numerous editors and utilities to instantly locate the definitions.
Universal Ctags
Universal-ctags aims to continue development from what existed in the Sourceforge area. The #Exuberant Ctags repository was started by Reza Jelveh and was later moved to the universal-ctags organization.
The goal of the project is to prepare and maintain a common/unified space where people interested in improving ctags can work together.
