Cryptocurrency is a compound of 'crypto-', meaning 'encryption', and 'currency', meaning money. It is a digital asset that is transferred securely through public-key cryptography on a distributed ledger (Distributed Ledger), and whose ownership can be easily proven using hash functions. Cryptocurrencies generally run on a distributed ledger (Distributed Ledger) based on a blockchain or a DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph).
