Cosmology (Greek: κοσμολογία) is the quantitative (mainly mathematical) study of the universe as a whole and, by extension, of humanity's place within it. The word is recent (《Cosmologia Generalis》, Christian Wolff, 1730), but the study of the universe has a long history involving science, philosophy, esotericism, and religion.

Human ideas about the universe have changed constantly and are identified with the history of physics or astronomy.
